Soundslike: Don’t Look Back

Last weekend, I took a train trip from Michigan to Chicago. I’ve made that trip many times over the years, and it has become a familiar joy to arrive in the train station and emerge into the gleaming, white city.

But this time, I felt the same bravery that I did the first time I boarded the train alone when I was 17. This time, I was on my way to visit someone who may or may not become an important part of my life. And this time, the train whistle - a sound I fell asleep to in my parents’ house, a sound that made my grandfather cry when he was an old man - sounded urgent and insistent. It was the sound of inevitability; a reminder that, no matter how scared I was, I couldn’t turn around and go back.
